About the Author

Gerry Ewert


Gerry Ewert holds an EdD (Harvard Graduate School of Education), an MA in Education (Administration: Planning and Social Policy in International Development), an MA in Educational Psychology (Cognitive Development, University of Alberta), a Professional Teaching Diploma, and a BA (Honours, Physiological Psychology, University of Alberta). His doctoral dissertation focused on a practical approach to ethical policy development, applying Habermas’ critical theory to Ewert’s theory of action.

Ewert’s extensive experience in education and practical philosophy includes over thirty years in government, both in a practical philosopher’s approach to critical theory Canada and overseas—Indonesia, Nigeria, Egypt, Lesotho, and Kenya. His work in a variety of capacities has included technical statistical and simulation modelling expertise, proposal development, technical and policy framework development, research and statistical support, and technical support.

He has published in professional and academic journals including "Habermas and Education: A Comprehensive Overview of the Influence of Habermas in Educational Literature", Review of Educational Research, Vol. 61, No. 3; "Government Business is not a Business", Policy Options, June, Vol. 12, No. 5; and his article, “Alberta Correspondence School Principal’s Survey” in the January 1986 ICDE Bulletin, received a Certificate of Scholarship Excellence from the NUCEA. Ewert has authored three previous books: Annotated Bibliographic Compendium of Literature on Education in Japan, An Examination of Tuition Fee Structures in Alberta: Technical Paper I—The Institutional Perspective, and An Examination of Tuition Fee Structures in Alberta: Technical Paper II—The Student Perspective. He lives in Whitehorse, Yukon, with his wife Barbara and dog Watson.
